Back in 2011, I had the honour of attending one of Julian Roberts classes. He taught a class called Design Class: Flatness and Form, at the Barbican, as part of the Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion.
As a Pattern Cutter/Designer Julian is the inventor of Subtration Cutting, a method of pattern cutting that has been connected to Zero Wastage pattern cutting. Developing ways of creating garments, whilst using all or as much of the fabric as possible. It is experimental and innovative and has been developed in many different ways by a variety of designers.
Here is a video:
Julian and Shingo Sato demonstrate their techniques, Subtraction Cutting vs. TR Cutting, at the DOMUS academy in Milan, Italy.
He is a fascinating Creative Pattern Cutter and Designer, click on the image above to download his instructions.
